Disney Premieres African Animation “Iwájú” to Global Audience

After nearly five years of dedication, the animation team at Kugali Media celebrates the launch of their comic book series “Iwájú” as a groundbreaking animated series now available on Disney+.

Set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria, “Iwájú” represents a unique collaboration between Kugali and Walt Disney Animation Studios, marking a significant milestone in showcasing African storytelling on a global platform.

Hamid Ibrahim, CEO of Kugali, underscores the company’s mission to share high-quality African narratives with the world, expressing pride in Disney’s recognition of their work.

The animated series, brought to life by a talented cast of Nigerian voice actors, aims to authentically capture the essence of Lagos. Tolu Olowofoyeku, serving as the team’s cultural consultant, ensured the portrayal remained true to Nigerian culture and language.

“Iwájú” is not merely about showcasing the city’s facets but also about fostering understanding and appreciation of African culture among viewers worldwide.

Despite premiering on Disney+ without availability in Africa, the show will air on the Disney Channel across the continent starting April 22, ensuring broader accessibility to African audiences.

Ibrahim hopes “Iwájú” resonates with viewers of all ages, imparting valuable lessons about resilience and perseverance.

Disney’s collaboration with Kugali underscores a commitment to authentic storytelling and representation. Christine Service, General Manager for Walt Disney Company Africa, emphasizes the importance of reflecting diverse narratives and worlds to engage audiences.

Accompanying the series, a captivating soundtrack by Nigerian composer Ré Olunuga and a culinary game titled “Disney Iwájú: Rising Chef” are set for release, further celebrating African culture and cuisine.

As “Iwájú” takes flight, Ibrahim looks forward to exploring more African stories, envisioning future projects funded and produced entirely within Africa for global audiences.

The premiere of “Iwájú” heralds a new era of African animation, amplifying voices and stories from the continent on the world stage.
