Final Farewell: Late Former Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu Laid to Rest in Owo*

The ancient town of Owo, Ondo State, bore witness to a gathering of dignitaries from all spheres of life as they converged to bid farewell to the late former governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, whose final burial rites took place on Friday.

Akeredolu, who passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, after a prolonged illness in a German hospital at the age of 67, was laid to rest at the burial site in the community, marking the conclusion of a chapter in his illustrious life.

The burial proceedings commenced with the arrival of the former governor’s body in the state on Wednesday, followed by a special court session held in his honor. Subsequently, the remains were conveyed to the Akure Township Stadium for a lying-in-state and commendation service, paying tribute to his legacy and contributions to the state.

On Friday, a solemn funeral service was held at the St. Andrew’s Cathedral Anglican Church, Imola, Owo, with notable figures such as Vice President Mallam Kashim Shettima and other dignitaries in attendance. The service provided an opportunity for family members, friends, and associates to bid their final farewells and honor the memory of the departed.

In a heartfelt tribute, Betty Akeredolu, the wife of the late former governor, addressed critics of their relationship, expressing her grief and defending their bond against disparaging remarks.
