Wabara Vows Resistance as PDP Faces Exodus, Alleges APC’s Interference

Former Senate President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, has pledged staunch opposition to any attempts by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to transform Nigeria into a one-party state. His declaration comes amidst a reported exodus of key PDP members in the South East geo-political zone.

Responding to the mass resignations of notable PDP figures, including former Governor of Imo State, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, Senator Wabara accused the APC of orchestrating a plot to dismantle the opposition party by exploiting internal divisions.

The wave of resignations, which swept across Imo State, reportedly included several National and state officers of the PDP. Among them were Chief Chris Okewulonu, a member of the BoT, and various zonal and state-level officials.

In light of these developments, Senator Wabara affirmed the commitment of the PDP BoT to intervene swiftly to prevent further defections. He emphasized the BoT’s role as the conscience of the party, vowing to thwart any attempts by self-serving individuals to destabilize the PDP.

Wabara reassured party members that the BoT, comprising distinguished and experienced leaders, would take decisive action to safeguard the PDP’s integrity. He condemned any collaboration between certain PDP members and the APC, warning against the erosion of Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.

Amidst the internal strife, Senator Wabara expressed confidence in the PDP’s resilience, citing the party’s history of overcoming challenges. He expressed optimism that internal grievances would be resolved amicably, asserting the party’s capacity to navigate internal disputes.

Prior to the recent developments, Wabara had dismissed speculations of the PDP’s collapse, affirming the party’s strength and unity. However, analysts attribute the ongoing crisis within the PDP to power struggles between key figures such as Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate in 2023, and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike.
