Telecoms Union Declares Indefinite Strike over Anti-Labour Practices

The Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN) has announced an indefinite strike starting from midnight on Thursday, April 4, 2024. The decision comes in response to alleged anti-labour practices against field engineers by subcontractors engaged in projects awarded by Huawei Technologies Nigeria Limited.

The union identified subcontractors such as Reime Group, All Streamenergy Solutions Limited, Uppercrest Limited, Tyllium Nigeria Limited, and Specific Tools and Techniques Limited as the main perpetrators of these practices. Grievances include appalling working conditions resembling modern-day slavery, lack of entitlements commensurate with workers’ efforts, and inadequate security measures during late-night field assignments.

PTECSSAN’s demands include the immediate recognition of employees’ fundamental rights to association, acknowledgment of the union as the negotiating body for workers’ welfare, and proper remittance of membership dues. Additionally, the union calls for the regularisation of employment for members involved in Huawei projects, compliance with pension and health insurance regulations, and negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement.

Despite efforts by the Ministry of Labour and Employment to address concerns through conciliatory meetings, the companies have reportedly failed to engage constructively. Consequently, the union has decided to initiate industrial action.
