Senate Holds Closed-Door Meeting with FCT Minister, Police Commissioner

The Senate convened a closed-door meeting on Wednesday with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igwe, to address security concerns in the FCT.

During the plenary session, the Senate unanimously agreed to postpone the first order of the day to facilitate discussions with Wike and Igwe in a Committee of the Whole.

Deputy Senate Leader, Oyelola Ashiru, moved the motion to reschedule the agenda item, emphasizing the importance of receiving briefings from the minister and commissioner regarding security modalities in the FCT.

This meeting follows a previous summons issued by the Senate on February 28, in response to the murder of Chris Agidy, an aide to Senator Ned Nwoko, by kidnappers. The Senate sought clarification from Wike and Igwe on the escalating cases of kidnapping within the nation’s capital.

The resolution to summon the FCT Minister and the police commissioner was prompted by a motion sponsored by Senator Nwoko, highlighting the abduction and subsequent killing of his senior legislative assistant, Agidy, along with 19 others in the Galadimawa area of Abuja in November 2023.
