Peter Obi Advocates for Rule of Law to Ensure Nigeria’s Prosperity

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has issued a stark warning, emphasizing that Nigeria’s prosperity hinges on its adherence to the rule of law. Speaking at the 5th memorial lecture of Late Justice Anthony Aniagolu at the Godfrey Okoye University in Enugu, Obi lamented the failure of both executives and the judiciary to uphold this fundamental principle.

Addressing the audience on the topic, “The judiciary and the future of Nigeria,” Obi underscored the detrimental impact of disregarding the rule of law on the nation’s future. He stressed that the absence of respect for the rule of law compromises Nigeria’s development prospects and creates an inhospitable environment for businesses, both domestic and international.

“The rule of law fosters development through strengthening the voices of individuals and communities, by providing access to justice, ensuring due process, and establishing remedies for the violation of rights,” Obi asserted.

Highlighting the challenges faced by businesses in Nigeria, Obi pointed to insecurity and the lack of respect for the rule of law as significant impediments. He emphasized the indispensable role of a fair, strong, and independent judiciary in upholding the rule of law and facilitating national progress.

“The dwindling state of Nigeria today can be attributed to the absence of respect for the rule of law,” Obi remarked, emphasizing the necessity of a conducive environment for businesses and investors. He noted that without the assurance of fair judgment and the ability to challenge the government, businesses would hesitate to invest, hindering economic growth.

In his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Prof. Christian Anieke, highlighted the significance of Justice Aniagolu’s legacy and the importance of incorruptible judges in safeguarding democracy. He emphasized the critical role of individuals like Justice Aniagolu in Nigeria’s justice sector to uphold the rule of law and ensure a fair and just society.
