Oyo State Governor Urges National Assembly Committee to Strengthen Democracy and National Unity

Oyo State Governor, Engr ‘Seyi Makinde, has called on members of the National Assembly Joint Committee on Electoral Matters to propose amendments that will enhance Nigeria’s democracy and foster national unity. Hosting the federal legislators in his office, Governor Makinde emphasized the importance of instilling confidence in Nigeria’s democracy and encouraging active participation from citizens.

Addressing the committee, Governor Makinde urged them to approach their task with an open mind and prioritize the nation’s interest over personal agendas. He emphasized the significance of a united Nigeria and underscored the committee’s role in shaping the country’s democratic landscape.

Highlighting the need for transparent and inclusive electoral processes, Governor Makinde emphasized the importance of preventing post-election litigations by ensuring that election outcomes reflect the will of the people. He stressed the responsibility of leaders to deepen democracy and create opportunities for youth involvement in nation-building.

Commending the committee for engaging with young people and women, Governor Makinde reiterated his support for youth empowerment and encouraged their active participation in governance. He pledged his administration’s support to the committee and emphasized that its success would impact Nigeria’s democratic experience.

In his remarks, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters, Honourable Adebayo Balogun, praised Governor Makinde for his support for youth inclusion and expressed confidence in the success of the committee’s consultations. He highlighted the committee’s commitment to addressing electoral litigations and ensuring a smooth transition of elected officials into office.
