Gunmen Attack Two Communities in Kogi State, Leaving 19 Dead

Gunmen launched a deadly attack on two communities, Agojeju Odo and Abejukolo, in Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants, suspected to be herdsmen, conducted a reprisal attack on Thursday, resulting in significant casualties and property destruction.

The attackers, allegedly engaged in a conflict with Agatu militia in neighboring Benue State, extended their violence to Agojeju Odo, Ajokpachi Odo, Bagaji, and surrounding areas, devastating farmland and homes.

Local residents recounted harrowing experiences, with one individual tragically losing their wife and children in the onslaught. The assailants purportedly accused the communities of colluding with the Agatus against them, leading to the brutal retaliation.

Expressing desperation for assistance, residents called on Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo and security agencies to intervene promptly. They highlighted the overwhelmed state of local law enforcement and appealed for additional security personnel to quell the violence.

Confirming the incident, the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, disclosed that 19 people lost their lives in the communal clashes. Security forces, including the police counter-terrorism unit and the Army, have been deployed to restore calm and ensure the safety of affected communities.
