Edo State Deputy Governor Impeached, New Deputy Sworn In Amidst Political Turmoil

In a dramatic turn of events, the Edo State House of Assembly impeached Philip Shaibu, the former Deputy Governor, almost a year after allegations of a plot to impeach him first surfaced. Shaibu, who served in the position for over seven years, faced impeachment following the consideration of a report by a seven-man panel, culminating in the first-ever removal of a deputy governor by lawmakers in the state.

During the plenary session attended by 20 members, including Speaker Blessing Agbebaku, 18 members voted in favor of Shaibu’s impeachment, marking a significant political upheaval. Chief Judge Daniel Okungbowa subsequently swore in Godwin Omobayo as the new deputy governor, signaling a new chapter in Edo State’s political landscape.

Shaibu’s impeachment, attributed to allegations of gross misconduct and disclosure of official secrets, underscores the turbulent relationship between him and Governor Godwin Obaseki. Despite Shaibu’s vow to contest the impeachment and his assertion of it being a threat to democracy, the proceedings continued, leading to his removal from office.

In his response, Shaibu condemned the impeachment as an attack on democratic principles and an attempt to stifle opposition. He expressed his commitment to fighting against what he perceived as an abuse of power and betrayal of public trust.

Meanwhile, Omobayo, the newly-appointed deputy governor, pledged to collaborate with Governor Obaseki to advance the state’s development agenda. Recognized for his grassroots support and professional expertise, Omobayo’s appointment symbolizes a strategic move by Obaseki to harness the potential of youth leadership in driving Edo State’s progress.

The impeachment saga has elicited mixed reactions, with the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) describing it as an internal matter of the party, while the Coalition of Registered Political Parties (CRPP) condemned the move, urging Governor Obaseki to reconsider. However, amidst the political turmoil, Obaseki remains resolute in his decision, emphasizing Omobayo’s capacity to contribute to the state’s growth and prosperity.
