Benue State Bids Farewell to Victims of Armed Herders’ Attack in Emotionally Charged Mass Burial

The community of Mbakyor in Mbalom, Gwer-East Local Government Area of Benue State, gathered on Tuesday for a somber occasion as they bid farewell to the 17 victims of a brutal attack by armed herders.

Governor Hyacinth Alia, represented by his deputy Sam Ode, expressed deep sorrow at the tragic loss of lives and emphasized the urgent need for proactive measures to end the incessant attacks. Governor Alia advocated for the formation of vigilante groups as a viable solution to augmenting existing security efforts.

The victims, including a retired WO2 Army Officer and a young boy, were laid to rest in a mass burial ceremony, with two already interred due to the gruesome nature of their deaths.

Addressing the grieving community, Governor Alia pledged to improve infrastructure in the area to enhance security response capabilities and provide necessary support to the affected families. He also promised to meet with the bereaved families personally and prayed for the prevention of future tragedies.

Elias Audu, a member of the Benue House of Assembly, raised concerns about the adequacy of security measures during the attack, highlighting the need for accountability and effective intervention strategies. Despite acknowledging the efforts of Governor Alia, Audu stressed the importance of reprimanding security agencies for lapses in their response.

The community echoed calls for enhanced security measures, with Prof. Vitalis Tarhule emphasizing the government’s responsibility to protect lives and property. He urged the establishment of a security post in Mbaikyor to deter further attacks.

Simon Kofi, Chairman of the Association of Mbaikyor Sons in diaspora, revealed efforts by the community to address security concerns, including apprehending herders engaged in nefarious activities and handing them over to the authorities.

The mass burial was preceded by an interdenominational service, offering solace and support to the grieving families as they bid farewell to their loved ones.
