Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced plans to make public a forensic audit report implicating his predecessor, Okezie Ikpeazu, in the diversion of state funds. During his monthly media chat titled “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians,” held at Government House Umuahia, Otti disclosed details of the audit, which reportedly uncovered the transfer of billions of naira meant for projects into individual company accounts.
According to Otti, the audit revealed that the previous administration under Ikpeazu diverted N10 billion earmarked for airport development into 32 different company accounts before dispersing the funds. He emphasized that the money was moved out of the state government’s account before seeking approval from the Abia State House of Assembly.
Addressing the denial by Ikpeazu’s camp, Otti reiterated the findings of the forensic audit, dismissing claims that the funds were allocated for road construction. He highlighted discrepancies in the statements provided by the company allegedly involved in the misappropriation, asserting that they admitted to never applying for nor having the expertise to undertake the airport project.
While Otti stressed the importance of accountability and the need for the funds to be refunded, he expressed his preference for restitution over punitive measures. He underscored the role of security agencies in handling the matter once the report is made public.
Regarding recent political developments in the state, Otti remained unfazed by the defection of members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He likened political parties to churches, stating that individuals are free to align with any party of their choice. Otti emphasized his focus on governance and delivering tangible results for the people of Abia State.
Furthermore, Otti highlighted his administration’s commitment to women’s empowerment initiatives, underscoring the importance of inclusive development policies.
