Zubimendi’s Late Strike Secures Spain’s Victory Over Denmark in UEFA Nations League

Spain’s first home match since their Euro 2024 triumph ended in a hard-fought 1-0 win over Denmark, thanks to a late volley from Martin Zubimendi. The Real Sociedad midfielder’s 79th-minute strike broke the deadlock in a game that seemed destined for a draw.

Zubimendi, who rejected a move to Liverpool in the summer, unleashed a first-time shot from outside the penalty area, beating Denmark’s Kasper Schmeichel with a deflected effort. It was Zubimendi’s first goal for Spain, and although Schmeichel might feel he could have done more, he had otherwise been in fine form. The Danish goalkeeper made two key saves, denying Spain’s captain Alvaro Morata twice and keeping out a shot from 17-year-old Lamine Yamal.

Before the match, the sell-out crowd in Murcia enjoyed a celebratory atmosphere as Spain showcased the European Championship trophy they claimed in July by defeating England in the final. The win places Spain at the top of Group A4 in the UEFA Nations League, with seven points, overtaking Denmark, who now have six. Spain will next host Serbia, while Denmark travels to Switzerland.
