The New York Yankees clinched their place in the World Series for the first time since 2009 after defeating the Cleveland Guardians 4-1 in the American League Championship Series. In a decisive game five, the Yankees emerged victorious with a 5-2 win, thanks to a dramatic extra-inning home run from Juan Soto.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the 10th inning, Soto smashed a three-run homer off Cleveland pitcher Hunter Gaddis, sealing the win and sending the Yankees to baseball’s biggest stage. Giancarlo Stanton also played a crucial role, hitting a two-run home run in the sixth inning to bring the Yankees level after trailing 2-0.
“It’s the best feeling in the game whenever you win and take your team to the World Series,” Soto said. “That’s what we play for. We’ve been working hard. Now we’re the best team in the American League.”
The Yankees will now await the winner of the National League Championship Series, where the Los Angeles Dodgers hold a 3-2 lead over the New York Mets. The Dodgers host game six on Sunday.
