Wojciech Szczesny Announces Retirement at 34 After Illustrious Career

Former Arsenal and Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has officially retired from professional football at the age of 34. The Warsaw-born player, who enjoyed a storied career across Europe, made the announcement on social media, reflecting on his journey from Arsenal’s academy to playing on some of football’s biggest stages.

Szczesny joined Arsenal as a 16-year-old in 2006 and went on to make 181 appearances for the Gunners. During his time in north London, he won two FA Cups and the 2014 Community Shield. After a brief loan spell at Brentford and two seasons on loan at Roma, Szczesny moved to Juventus in 2017. Over six seasons with the Italian giants, he played 252 times, winning eight major trophies, including three Serie A titles.

Internationally, Szczesny earned 84 caps for Poland, representing his country in four European Championships and two World Cups.

Reflecting on his career, Szczesny expressed deep gratitude for his experiences, stating, “I didn’t just realise my dreams, I’ve arrived where my imagination wouldn’t even dare to take me. I played the game at the highest level with the best players in history without ever feeling inferior.”

He added that, despite his body still being ready for challenges, his heart was no longer in the game. “Today, though my body still feels ready for challenges, my heart is not there anymore. I feel that right now it is time to give all of my attention to my family,” he concluded.
