Walkie-Talkie Explosions Rock Lebanon, Leaving 20 Dead and Hundreds Injured

A second wave of devastating explosions from wireless communication devices has struck Lebanon, killing at least 20 people and injuring over 450 others. The blasts occurred in Hezbollah strongholds, including Beirut’s southern suburbs, the Bekaa Valley, and southern Lebanon.

The explosions reportedly involved walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah members, and some took place during funerals for victims of an earlier attack that saw pagers detonating across the country. Tuesday’s explosions, which Hezbollah attributed to Israel, had already killed 12 people and injured 2,800 others.

The deadly incident on Wednesday has heightened concerns that Hezbollah’s communication network may have been compromised, further humiliating the group. Thousands of pagers exploded simultaneously on Tuesday after a message believed to have come from Hezbollah was received by members, shocking and enraging many in Lebanon. Among the 12 fatalities were an eight-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy.

The blasts at Wednesday’s funerals added to the chaos. A witness in southern Beirut described hearing a loud explosion at around 17:00 local time, as confusion and fear spread. Shortly after, reports of additional explosions from other parts of the country began to surface.
