Liverpool’s stalwart defender, Virgil Van Dijk, has publicly expressed his fondness for Afrobeats, a music genre that he says brings him positive vibes. The Dutch footballer has highlighted this preference by incorporating songs from prominent Nigerian artists into his playlist for the upcoming 2024 EFL Carabao Cup Final, shared through the EFL’s TikTok page.
Van Dijk’s selection features tracks by Omah Lay, Asake, and Rema, showcasing his appreciation for the rhythm and energy of Afrobeats. The playlist also includes classics from the late American rapper The Notorious B.I.G and Mase, making them the only non-Nigerian acts to feature on his list.
“Hi, my name is Virgil Van Dijk and these are my top five tracks,” Van Dijk announces, delving into his choices. He begins with “Holy Ghost” by Omah Lay, describing it as “dope” and a mood enhancer. Mase’s “Feel So Good” follows, a track he calls a “very good classic” and “unbelievable.” The Notorious B.I.G’s “Mo Money Mo Problems” is his third choice, praised for its “nice vibes.” Van Dijk continues with “Lonely At The Top” by Asake and concludes with “Charm” by Rema, both described as having “nice vibes” and complementing his desire for sunny, joyful days, especially when celebrating a victory like the Carabao Cup Final.
