Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has revealed that he is in discussions with the club regarding a new contract. The 33-year-old Dutch centre-back, whose current deal expires at the end of this season, confirmed the talks but remained uncertain about the outcome.
“Discussions are ongoing, we will see what happens in the future,” van Dijk said after Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Chelsea. “My full focus is on Liverpool, wanting to win games that are ahead of me and nothing else.”
Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool in January 2018 for £75 million from Southampton, has played a pivotal role in the team’s success, helping them win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. This season, under new manager Arne Slot, he has been key to Liverpool’s strong start, which sees them top of the Premier League after seven wins from eight matches.
Despite his importance to the team, van Dijk remained non-committal about his future, stating, “What the future will bring I have no idea at the moment. I can only tell you that discussions have started and we will see.”
With uncertainty surrounding the contract situations of other key players, including Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, Van Dijk’s potential renewal would be a relief for Liverpool fans.
Van Dijk’s leadership on the pitch has been instrumental in Liverpool boasting the best defensive record in the league, conceding just three goals. His influence extends beyond match days, with manager Slot highlighting his impact in training: “He’s always the one that’s most loud during the sessions… He’s definitely our leader.”
