Uwazuruike Accuses Simon Ekpa of Confusing Biafra Struggle

Founder of the Biafra Independence Movement (BIM), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, has criticized Finland-based Simon Ekpa, the self-proclaimed “prime minister of Biafra in exile,” accusing him of causing confusion rather than advancing the Biafran independence cause. Uwazuruike expressed this during the 25th anniversary of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) in Aba.

Speaking through Ezinne Uwaezuoke David, the newly appointed Biafran prime minister, Uwazuruike stressed that true leadership must start from within Biafra, not from exile. He emphasized the non-violent approach that MASSOB/BIM has advocated since its inception in 1999, distancing the group from the violent methods allegedly endorsed by Ekpa.

“Simon Ekpa claims to be the prime minister of Biafra in exile, but without being on the ground, he’s disconnected from the reality at home. We remain committed to our non-violent pursuit of Biafra’s independence, as recognized by the United Nations People’s Organization (UNPO),” Uwazuruike said.

He reassured that despite the proliferation of pro-Biafra groups, unity among these factions is on the horizon as they work towards achieving the same goal—Biafran independence.

He further noted the significant progress made over the last 25 years, with the movement now recognized internationally. “We have crossed the stage of demonstrations and protests. Our focus is now on developing ideas for a better Biafra. The days of violence and bloodshed are behind us.”

Uwazuruike also highlighted the inclusive nature of the new Biafran government, stating that it is composed of representatives from all Biafran territories, including Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa-Ibom, and others. He urged pro-Biafra groups to unite under this peaceful framework.
