UPDATED: Sheikh Gumi Addresses DSS Invitation: Calls for National Unity in Tackling Banditry

Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has spoken out following his invitation by the Department of State Services (DSS) regarding his comments on the activities of bandits in Nigeria. Gumi deemed the invitation necessary and described his interaction with security agents as productive.

Minister of Information and Orientation, Mohammed Idris, confirmed Gumi’s invitation for questioning, emphasizing the principle that no one is above the law. Gumi, known for his efforts to engage with bandits, particularly in securing the release of abducted victims, had previously offered to dialogue with perpetrators.

In a social media post titled ‘Only one person is above the law: The Innocent!’ Gumi reassured the public, stating, “There is absolutely no cause for alarm.” He emphasized the importance of national unity and collaboration in combating the menace of banditry, stressing the need for synergy to achieve lasting peace.

Gumi’s involvement in negotiating the release of abducted persons on behalf of state governments has drawn both praise and criticism. Recently, his associate, Tukur Mamu, was named among persons linked with terrorism financing by the Federal Government. In response, Gumi condemned the allegations, asserting that only a court of competent jurisdiction can make such determinations regarding his associates.
