University of Lagos Staff Protest Over Withheld Salaries

Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational Associated Institutions (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAATS) at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) staged a peaceful protest on Wednesday, voicing their grievances over withheld salaries by the Federal Government.

Blocking the school’s gate, the protesters disrupted vehicular movement and traffic flow, chanting songs and brandishing placards to express their dissatisfaction. Their protest is a response to their exclusion from salary payments, which began for the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in February.

The salaries of these university workers were withheld following the implementation of a ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy during strikes under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. ASUU, SSANU, and NAATS had embarked on strikes lasting eight months, four months, and five-and-a-half months, respectively, in 2022.

In solidarity with SSANU and NASU, NAATS has also commenced a three-day warning strike today, amplifying the demand for fair treatment and salary disbursement.

Further details to be provided as the situation unfolds.
