The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has lifted the visa restrictions it had imposed on Nigerians, effective immediately. This announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following a Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu on Monday.
Idris confirmed that the Federal Government and UAE authorities reached an agreement to vacate the travel restrictions, allowing Nigerian passport holders to travel to the UAE without any hindrance.
“Today an agreement has been reached with the UAE effective from today, July 15, Nigerian passport holders intending to travel to UAE can do so,” Idris stated.
The UAE had previously imposed a visa ban on Nigeria due to several diplomatic disputes, which also led to Dubai’s Emirates airline suspending flight operations to Nigeria over the Central Bank of Nigeria’s inability to remit an estimated $85 million in revenue.
In June, after a series of meetings with the UAE government, the Nigerian government assured its citizens that the visa ban would soon be lifted. The Nigerian government also announced that it had paid 98 percent of $850 million owed.
Further details on the agreement and its implementation are expected to be released soon.
