Tyreek Hill Detained by Police Before Season Opener, Investigation Underway

The Miami-Dade Police Department has launched an internal investigation after Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained before his team’s season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hill was briefly handcuffed by police near the Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday for an alleged traffic violation, as seen in footage shared by ESPN. Despite the incident, Hill later played in the game and scored a touchdown, celebrating by mimicking being handcuffed.

The police have placed one of the officers involved on administrative duties pending the outcome of the investigation. Miami-Dade Police Department director Stephanie V. Daniels stated, “I initiated an internal affairs investigation to ensure a thorough review of the matter… I’m committed to transparency and accountability.”

Hill, 30, who was released shortly after the incident, expressed confusion over the situation, saying he did not understand why he was stopped and handcuffed. “They said I was speeding, reckless driving, whatever,” he said. Hill emphasized that he remained respectful throughout the interaction, following advice from family to stay calm.

Hill also used the opportunity to highlight potential biases, saying, “What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?” He expressed a desire to turn the situation into a positive outcome for both himself and the Miami-Dade Police, suggesting future collaboration for community efforts.

The South Florida Police Benevolent Association later issued a statement claiming Hill had been “uncooperative” during the stop and that he was handcuffed for officer safety. According to the union’s president, Steadman Stahl, Hill refused to comply with requests and was “redirected to the ground.”

Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, expressed concern over the situation, describing it as “heartbreaking” and “mind-boggling.” Rosenhaus said they will be looking into the matter further.
