Tully Kearney and Maisie Summers-Newton Shine at Paris Paralympics with Gold Medal Wins

Tully Kearney secured her second gold at the Paris Paralympics, while Maisie Summers-Newton added another title to her growing collection, marking a triumphant night for Britain’s Para-swimmers.

Kearney, who had already claimed gold in the S5 200m freestyle, successfully defended her 100m freestyle title. The 27-year-old was neck-and-neck with Ukraine’s Iryna Poida in the first 50 meters, but a powerful turn saw her pull ahead, finishing with a time of 1:15.10, 2.27 seconds ahead of Poida.

Meanwhile, Summers-Newton retained her SM6 200m individual medley title, a victory she described as nerve-wracking due to the pressure of defending her Paralympic champion status. Despite these nerves, the 22-year-old Northampton swimmer led the race, especially excelling in the breaststroke leg, and finished in 2:56.90, well ahead of her American rival Ellie Marks and China’s Liu Daomin.

Summers-Newton, who recently completed a degree in primary school teaching, acknowledged the intense pressure she felt but credited her strength in the breaststroke for her confidence. She looks forward to defending her 100m title in the same discipline on Sunday.

Kearney, who faced a hectic 24 hours after her previous final, expressed relief and joy in her performance, highlighting the importance of self-belief and technical precision in her success.

These victories underscore the continued dominance and resilience of Britain’s Para-swimmers on the world stage.
