The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has expressed dissatisfaction with the delay in concluding negotiations on a new minimum wage and called on the Federal Government to expedite the process. Speaking after the National Executive Council meeting, TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo emphasized the importance of empowering the working class to stimulate economic growth and urged the government to ensure timely payments of wage awards to federal workers.
Highlighting the economic challenges faced by workers, Osifo criticized the non-payment of wage awards for March and April 2024 and called for immediate action to address the issue. He also lamented the lukewarm attitude of some state governors, particularly in the Niger Delta region, towards the payment of wage awards and distribution of palliatives to workers.
In addition to addressing wage-related issues, Osifo called for the review of obsolete labor laws in the country, noting the challenges in passing new labor legislation through the National Assembly.
Furthermore, the TUC leadership criticized the Federal Government’s unilateral decision to increase electricity tariffs without consulting stakeholders, emphasizing the need for inclusive decision-making processes and expressing concern over the lack of metering for most Nigerians.
