In a heart-wrenching incident in Maselu village, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State, a 49-year-old man, Fasasi Afeez, lost his life while attempting to rescue his son, Kaleed, from a well. According to reports gathered by PUNCH Online, the 17-year-old boy was drawing water from the well when he slipped and fell in. In a desperate bid to save his son, Afeez also slipped and fell into the well.
The Kwara State Fire Service, through its Head of Media and Publicity, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the tragic event. Despite efforts to rescue them, Afeez was found dead in the well, while his son, Kaleed, was successfully brought out alive.
Adekunle’s statement detailed the sequence of events, indicating that the incident occurred around 4:11 pm on Thursday, February 22, 2024. Alhaji Taiye Gadamosi, a resident in the neighborhood, alerted the fire service, prompting their immediate response.
The Director of Kwara State Fire Service, Falade Olumuyiwa, expressed deep sadness over the incident and urged the public to exercise caution in their daily activities. He emphasized the importance of avoiding risky situations, especially involving domestic wells. Falade advised against sending under-aged children to fetch water from wells, emphasizing the need for vigilance and safety measures in such tasks.
