A heartbreaking incident occurred in Oju town of Oju Local Government Area, Benue State, as a man named Mathew Ekpengbe and his neighbor tragically drowned in a public well while attempting to rescue Mathew’s 15-year-old son who had fallen into the well. The incident, which took place on Saturday, left the entire community in shock and mourning.
According to an eyewitness who spoke anonymously, Mathew had sent his son to fetch water from the well for use in his carwash business. However, the son accidentally fell into the well while attempting to retrieve a lost bucket. Upon witnessing his son’s fall, Mathew rushed to the scene to rescue him and sought the help of his neighbor.
In a devastating turn of events, both Mathew and his neighbor lost their lives while trying to save the boy. Despite efforts by bystanders to rescue them, all three individuals were pronounced dead upon retrieval from the well, which had served the community for many years.
The circumstances of their deaths prompted immediate burial by family members. The Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Anene Swuese, confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation was underway.
