A tragic boat accident on the River Niger has claimed the lives of several Nollywood actors, sparking a rescue operation by the Anambra State Police Command. The incident occurred on Wednesday, prompting an immediate response from authorities to save those onboard.
According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, seven individuals, including six actors and an actress, were rescued from the capsized boat. However, the search continues for three missing persons, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Aderemi Adeoye, expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased actors. The boat, which was returning to Asaba after conveying the crew to a film location in Anambra West LGA, encountered the tragic accident on its journey.
Anambra Command Marine Police swiftly deployed for rescue operations, successfully retrieving survivors from the water. Despite their efforts, the boat claimed the lives of several actors, including Nollywood actor Pope Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope, and three others.
The statement released by the Anambra State Police Command outlined the immediate actions taken following the accident. While the rescued individuals received medical attention, efforts were made to locate and rescue the missing crew members.
As investigations into the cause of the accident unfold, CP Aderemi Adeoye assured that exhaustive measures would be taken to determine any criminal liability involved. The Commissioner extended his condolences to the families, friends, and fans of the deceased actors, praying for the repose of their souls.
