President Bola Tinubu has emphatically stated his refusal to sanction the importation of food or to set up a price control board. This announcement was made following a crucial meeting in Abuja with key officials including the 36 state governors, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, the National Security Adviser (NSA), and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Amidst concerns over large-scale hoarding of food reported in Kano State and elsewhere, President Tinubu has taken a firm stance. He revealed that he had directed the NSA, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Director-General of DSS to ensure a coordinated effort by security agencies for the inspection of warehouses implicated in such activities, aiming to take decisive follow-up actions.
“We cannot allow speculators, hoarders, and rent seekers to undermine our efforts in ensuring that food is widely available to all Nigerians,” Tinubu asserted on X.
In a post on X, the President elaborated on his approach: “I will not establish a price control board, nor will I approve the importation of food. We must extricate ourselves from this predicament because importation only enables rent seekers to perpetrate fraud and mismanagement at our collective expense.”
Tinubu also highlighted his commitment to supporting Nigerian farmers through various schemes aimed at boosting food production. “Instead, we will support our farmers with schemes that encourage them to cultivate more food for the nation. We must also rapidly but thoughtfully implement our livestock development and management plans, including dairy farming and others,” he concluded.
