Tinubu: Ongoing Economic Reforms Will Drive Sustainable Growth

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to achieving sustainable economic growth through the diligent implementation of ongoing reforms. He made this assertion during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, China, as part of his visit to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations.

Tinubu highlighted the parallels between Nigeria’s current economic reforms and the transformative measures that China has successfully implemented under President Xi’s leadership. “We believe that President Xi has demonstrably reformed the Chinese economy, and our reform programme in Nigeria is on a similar course. I am a reformer with verifiable antecedents,” Tinubu stated.

The President emphasized that his administration is focused on comprehensive reforms across various sectors, including tax and tariff reviews. He assured that trading and investment partners would find Nigeria more accessible and conducive for business, with seamless processes for bringing in and repatriating investments.

President Xi Jinping, in his remarks, noted the long-standing mutual understanding between Nigeria and China, which has been cultivated over 50 years of diplomatic relations. He highlighted the importance of strategic coordination between the two countries as major developing nations, which would further strengthen China-Africa relations and promote collective progress among Global South countries.

Xi also pointed out that the upcoming 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit, scheduled from September 4 to September 6, offers a platform to reflect on the progress of China-Africa relations and to explore new avenues for cooperation. He pledged that China would continue to work closely with Nigeria within the FOCAC framework, setting a model for international cooperation.
