Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has agreed to take over as the next England men’s national team manager, according to sources close to the BBC. Tuchel, a 51-year-old German, will be the third non-British permanent England manager, following Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
The role has been vacant since Gareth Southgate resigned after England’s Euro 2024 final loss to Spain. Interim manager Lee Carsley will oversee England’s last two Nations League games against Greece and the Republic of Ireland in November, before Tuchel formally steps in.
Tuchel, who previously managed Chelsea from 2021 to 2022, winning the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, and UEFA Super Cup, is familiar with English football. His other coaching stints include Paris St-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, and most recently Bayern Munich, where he left after failing to win the Bundesliga title last season.
Despite an approach made to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, the Football Association has settled on Tuchel, who is expected to be unveiled at Wembley this week.
