Taylor Swift’s three highly anticipated concerts in Vienna have been abruptly cancelled following a confirmed Islamist attack plot targeting the events.
The announcement came late Wednesday from show organizer Barracuda Music, shortly after Austria’s government disclosed the planned attack at the Ernst Happel Stadium. Austria’s Chancellor Karl Nehammer stated that a potential tragedy had been averted thanks to swift action by authorities.
Barracuda Music addressed the situation on Instagram, stating, “With confirmation from government officials of a planned terrorist attack at Ernst Happel Stadium, we have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety.” The organizers assured fans that all tickets for the concerts, originally scheduled for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, would be refunded.
The cancellation follows the arrest of a 19-year-old Islamic State (IS) sympathizer who was allegedly planning an attack in the Vienna region, with a specific focus on Swift’s concerts. Austria’s top security official, Franz Ruf, revealed that the suspect, who had recently pledged allegiance to IS, was detained early Wednesday in Lower Austria, approximately an hour from the capital.
