Taylor Fritz Breaks 15-Year Drought for American Men in Grand Slam Final

Taylor Fritz made history by becoming the first American man in 15 years to reach a Grand Slam singles final after defeating compatriot Frances Tiafoe in a five-set thriller at the US Open. Fritz, 26, overcame a slow start to win 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in a dramatic match under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The last American man to reach a Grand Slam singles final was Andy Roddick, who achieved the feat at Wimbledon in 2009. Roddick was also the last to win a major, taking the US Open title in 2003.

Fritz, seeded 12th, will face world number one Jannik Sinner in Sunday’s final, marking his first time advancing beyond the quarterfinals in a Grand Slam.

Reflecting on his victory, Fritz said, “He overwhelmed me at the start and I was freaking out a little. I did all I could to stay in it. If I hadn’t done that, I’d regret it forever.”

For Tiafoe, it was a second consecutive semi-final defeat at the US Open, having lost to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in 2022.

The women’s singles could also see an American champion as Jessica Pegula prepares to face Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus in Saturday’s final.
