A faction of bakers in Nigeria, represented by the Supreme Bakers and Confectioners Association, has openly opposed the impending nationwide strike declared by some of their counterparts, emphasizing the need to prioritize national interest amidst ongoing challenges, including food insecurity.
The rift emerged following the announcement by the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCON) regarding their intention to commence a nationwide strike on February 27. AMBCON cited the Federal Government’s alleged failure to honor agreements made in 2020, alongside grievances regarding taxation and importation regulations within the bakery industry.
In contrast, the Supreme Bakers and Confectioners Association, through its acting National President, Edmund Egbuji, denounced the proposed strike, labeling it as “unpatriotic” given the current state of food insecurity and scarcity across the nation. Egbuji urged members of the Supreme Bakers Association to refrain from participating in the strike, advocating instead for constructive dialogue with the government to address industry concerns.
Highlighting their stance, Egbuji stated, “Going on strike will never be an option rather the government through its relevant ministries should call for a roundtable discussion to cushion the effects of food scarcity plight.”
