Stockholm Derby Suspended After Fan Incidents at Tele2 Arena

The highly anticipated Stockholm derby between Hammarby and Djurgarden was suspended on Sunday after Swedish police withdrew permission for the match to be played in front of fans due to safety concerns. The match at the Tele2 Arena was halted with Hammarby leading 2-0 in the second half after fireworks were thrown from the Djurgarden end, prompting authorities to take action.

The players were taken off the pitch, and an announcement soon followed stating that police had revoked the legal permission necessary to hold a public event at the stadium. As a result, the stadium, shared by both top-flight clubs, was evacuated.

Djurgarden later confirmed that the match would resume on Monday at 14:00 local time (13:00 BST), starting from the 76th minute, but without fans in attendance.

In a statement, Swedish police explained their decision: “The police authority has decided to dissolve a public event at Tele2 Arena today, Sunday, October 20. This follows the assessment that less invasive measures are considered insufficient… The organiser responsible for the public event is not deemed capable of guaranteeing order and safety.”

While most supporters complied and exited the stadium, some remained, chanting “we’re going nowhere” in protest. The stadium lights were eventually turned off to encourage the remaining fans to leave, creating uncertainty over whether the match would continue on Sunday.

Hammarby currently sit second in the Allsvenskan standings, ahead of Djurgarden on goal difference, though both clubs trail league leaders Malmo by 11 points.
