Stephen Curry has put an end to speculation about his future by signing a one-year contract extension with the Golden State Warriors, keeping him with the team until 2027. The extension, reportedly worth $62.6 million, guarantees the four-time NBA champion a total of $178 million over the next three years.
At 36, Curry continues to solidify his legacy, becoming the fourth NBA player to surpass $500 million in career earnings, joining LeBron James, Paul George, and Kevin Durant. By the end of his new deal, Curry’s on-court earnings will total approximately $532 million, ranking second only to James in NBA history.
Curry, who was drafted by the Warriors with the seventh overall pick in 2009, has spent his entire career with the franchise, leading them to four NBA titles. This season, however, he will face new challenges, notably the absence of long-time teammate Klay Thompson. Despite Curry’s efforts to retain Thompson, the Warriors were unable to reach a new contract agreement, leading Thompson to join the Dallas Mavericks.
With only Curry and Draymond Green remaining from the core group that secured the Warriors’ championships, the team is poised to enter a new era, relying more on their younger players after missing last season’s playoffs.
Curry’s impact on the game extends far beyond his individual achievements. Known for his extraordinary three-point shooting, Curry, along with Thompson, revolutionized basketball, making the three-point shot a crucial element of the game. His prowess from beyond the arc has set a new standard, with players across all positions now expected to be proficient in three-point shooting.
As the NBA’s all-time leader in three-pointers, with a tally of 3,747, Curry’s influence is undeniable. Even at 36, he continues to perform at an elite level, averaging 26.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.1 assists last season, and leading the league in three-point field goals for the eighth time in his career.
Curry’s remarkable achievements also include joining an elite group of NBA players who have won at least four championships, two MVP awards, and an Olympic gold medal, placing him among the likes of LeBron James, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Bill Russell.
