Officers of the Nigeria Police Force and armed men identified as “Special Forces” have reportedly prevented Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives from arresting former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, at his Abuja residence. The situation unfolded when EFCC operatives attempted to storm Bello’s home on Benghazi Street, Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, at about 9:30 am on Wednesday.
Despite the EFCC’s efforts, they were obstructed by police officers and armed men guarding the ex-governor. Earlier, Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo visited Bello amidst heavy security, including youth supporters protesting against the siege. The scene was characterized by a significant presence of armed operatives from various security agencies, including the EFCC, police, Department of State Security, Counter Terrorism Unit, and Bello’s private security team.
The reason behind the siege remains unconfirmed, as the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, did not respond to inquiries. However, the EFCC had previously filed charges against Bello, his nephew, and others over alleged money laundering amounting to N84 billion. In response, Bello’s media office condemned the EFCC’s actions, citing a court injunction restraining the commission from harassing or arresting him pending a court hearing.
The media office accused the EFCC of disregarding the court order and engaging in a plot to embarrass and harass Bello through spurious allegations. The state government also criticized the EFCC’s charges as “ridiculous” and questioned the agency’s integrity.
