SSANU Calls on Rivers State Government to Settle Eight Years Salary Debt

The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria University (SSANU) has intensified its call on the Rivers State Government to settle the eight years’ worth of salaries owed to its members.

The protesters, comprising senior staff members from three state-owned institutions – Rivers State University, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, and Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori – voiced their grievances, citing neglect by the former administration.

These SSANU members, who were reportedly disengaged from their positions by the previous administration upon Chief Nyesom Wike’s assumption of office, took their appeal to the current governor, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, during a peaceful demonstration and solidarity visit in Port Harcourt.

Speaking on behalf of SSANU, the South-South Vice President, Comrade Azuma Ugochukwu, urged Governor Fubara to address the eight-year backlog of salaries and arrears owed to the affected workers.

Ugochukwu emphasized the union’s support for Governor Fubara’s administration, expressing confidence that it would prioritize the plight of the affected teachers who have endured significant hardships due to non-payment of their entitlements by the previous administration.

“We are here to congratulate the governor of Rivers State on his Supreme Court victory. We, members of SSANU and all senior staff members of Nigerian universities, are in support of his government,” stated Ugochukwu.

“We want to reassure him that we are loyal to his government. We will continue to support and encourage him,” he added.

Furthermore, Ugochukwu highlighted the dire situation faced by members of the Demonstration School in Ignatius Ajuru University, Rivers State University, and Ken Poly, stressing that these individuals have not received their salaries for over eight years.

“We know that our able governor has been put in place by God so that he can right the wrong. We are confident that he will use his good office to address the challenges of our members by paying them their salaries and its backlog,” Ugochukwu affirmed.
