Speculation Grows Over Army Chief’s Health Amid Reports of Lobbying for Replacement

Concerns have emerged regarding the health of Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, following reports that he is undergoing treatment abroad for an undisclosed illness. An online report claimed that the Army chief is “bedridden and incapacitated,” fueling uncertainty within the military about his ability to continue leading.

The Army Headquarters, through spokesperson Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, dismissed rumors of a leadership vacuum, confirming that Lagbaja is on leave and that protocols are in place for Major General Abdulsalami Bagudu Ibrahim, Chief of Policy and Plans, to act in his stead. Nwachukwu stated, “The Nigerian Army is a highly structured establishment with well-laid-out procedures and processes for dealing with different circumstances.”

Lagbaja’s conspicuous absence from major events, including the October 1 Independence Day celebrations and a military burial, has intensified speculation about his condition. Sources cited in the report claimed that Lagbaja’s health had deteriorated, prompting his family to arrange for medical treatment abroad.

Amid the uncertainty, it is reported that senior military officers are quietly lobbying for the COAS position, particularly generals from the 40 and 41 Regular Courses. Efforts to secure support reportedly include reaching out to traditional leaders, politicians, and former heads of state.

In response to concerns over leadership stability, the Army reassured the public that military operations and administrative functions continue unaffected, with recent promotion exercises proceeding as scheduled. However, the delay in signing the 2024 promotion list has sparked dissatisfaction among personnel awaiting their promotions.

Lagbaja, appointed as the 27th COAS by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023, is known for his extensive operational experience, having held key positions within the Army. His absence has raised questions about succession plans, with the Army emphasizing that its existing structures ensure continuity regardless of individual circumstances.

The Army Headquarters expressed appreciation for the public’s concern and reassured that preparations are in place for Lagbaja’s return once his health permits.
