Spain Clinches Inaugural Women’s Nations League Title

Spain celebrated their second major trophy within six months as they triumphed over France to claim the inaugural Women’s Nations League title.

Building on their victory over England in the World Cup final last August, La Roja secured another impressive win, with goals from Aitana Bonmati and Mariona Caldentey sealing a comfortable victory in Seville.

The breakthrough came in the 32nd minute when Ballon d’Or winner Bonmati found the net from close range, capitalizing on an incisive run from defender Olga Carmona.

After the break, Caldentey extended Spain’s lead with a precise first-time finish following a well-executed pass from Ona Batlle.

Despite occasional pressure from France, Herve Renard’s side struggled to create meaningful opportunities and failed to register a shot on target throughout the match.

The historic occasion was witnessed by a record crowd of 32,657 at Estadio La Cartuja, surpassing the attendance of Spain’s semi-final victory over the Netherlands.

Spain’s dominance was evident from the outset, with early chances for Irene Paredes and others highlighting their attacking prowess.

Reflecting on the win, Bonmati expressed pride in her team’s achievements, emphasizing Spain’s remarkable run of success, including their triumph in the World Cup and now the Nations League title.

Under the guidance of coach Montse Tome, who took over from Jorge Vilda after the World Cup, Spain has undergone a period of resurgence, winning 18 of their last 20 matches. They now enter the 2024 Olympics as favorites, boasting an impressive record and a formidable presence on the international stage.

With their potent attacking style and commanding possession, Spain has established themselves as a dominant force in women’s football, cementing their status as a team with limitless potential and a bright future ahead.
