Southampton Sign Arsenal Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale for £25m

Southampton have secured the signing of Arsenal and England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale for £25 million. The Saints will pay an initial £18 million, with an additional £7 million in potential add-ons. Ramsdale, 26, has committed to a four-year deal at St. Mary’s, with an option to extend for a further 12 months.

Ramsdale expressed his excitement about the move, saying, “The way the manager wants to play, the way he was when I spoke to him, he was just full of so much enthusiasm. I’d never met him before but he made me feel about eight feet tall, which is just what you want.”

The goalkeeper, who has five caps for England and was part of Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad, made 89 appearances for Arsenal after joining from Sheffield United in 2021 for £26 million.

Southampton manager Russell Martin described Ramsdale as a “real statement signing,” adding, “I’m very grateful to ownership and the board for making it happen, especially as so many other clubs were keen to get him.”

Ramsdale, who had been linked with a move to Wolves, was spotted supporting close friend David Brooks at Southampton’s play-off win against Leeds United in May, dressed as Harry Potter character Hagrid—a tradition in their friendship group. The announcement of Ramsdale’s move was accompanied by a video of him dressed as Hagrid once again.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are expected to complete a season-long loan move for Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto to fill the void left by Ramsdale’s departure.
