South Korean Footballer Hwang Ui-jo Apologizes for Illegally Filming Sexual Encounters

South Korean striker Hwang Ui-jo has publicly apologized after being charged with secretly filming sexual encounters with two partners without their consent. The 31-year-old footballer, who recently transferred from England’s Nottingham Forest to Turkey’s Alanyaspor, admitted to filming the encounters on four occasions between June and September 2022.

During his first court appearance in Seoul on Wednesday, Hwang expressed deep regret, saying, “I sincerely apologise to the victims who have been affected by my actions, and I am deeply sorry for the disappointment I have caused to all those who have cared and supported me.” He added, “I will not do anything wrong in the future and will do my best as a footballer.”

The videos came to public attention in June after Hwang’s sister-in-law shared them on social media in an attempt to blackmail him. She was sentenced to three years in prison for her actions following a lawsuit by Hwang, but the charges against him continued, as prosecutors stated the videos were filmed without the women’s consent. Prosecutors have withheld details of the victims to avoid further harm.

Hwang’s case has drawn significant attention, marking a serious personal and legal challenge for the international footballer.
