Soaring Food Prices Plague Enugu Residents Amid Economic Turbulence

Enugu residents are grappling with significant price hikes in staple food items, with cassava flakes (garri) and rice witnessing over a 50% increase in prices, according to a recent market survey conducted by a NAN Correspondent.

The survey revealed that the price of garri has surged from N120 to N150 per cup since January, with a 5-litre painter now fetching between N2,200 and N2,700. Additionally, the cost of a bag of garri has skyrocketed to N29,000 from N18,500 earlier this year.

At Garki Market, Enugu, the price of a 50-kilogram bag of foreign rice has surged from between N55,000 and N60,000 to a staggering N78,000 to N80,000, depending on the brand.

Local traders attribute the sharp rise in food prices to factors such as limited farmland, increased exportation of produce, and the government’s inability to address food insecurity. Garri seller Mrs. Bridget Ugwu emphasized the need to secure farmlands and curb exportation to alleviate the scarcity of the commodity in the country.

Similarly, rice seller Mr. Ochuba Ozor expressed concerns over persistent high prices, warning of the adverse effects on food security if urgent government intervention is not forthcoming.

Enugu residents lamented the impact of rising food costs on their purchasing power, with some attributing the spike in living expenses to the removal of subsidies on petroleum products.
