Six Killed as Record Rains Hit Southwest China

Six people have died due to record rainfall in southwest China, state media reported on Thursday, as the country continues to experience extreme weather this summer.

Torrential rains lashed Dianjiang county, near Chongqing, from Wednesday night to Thursday morning, according to Xinhua, citing local officials. State broadcaster CCTV reported that four individuals died in “geological disasters” while two others drowned by early Thursday afternoon.

Xinhua detailed that one fatality resulted from a house collapse and at least three others were caught in a landslide. The heavy rains have impacted nearly 7,000 people, with 170 individuals evacuated from their homes.

Rainfall in some parts of Dianjiang reached up to 254.6 millimeters (10 inches), marking the highest daily maximum since records began.
