Seun Kuti, the Grammy-nominated afrobeat sensation, has taken a poignant stand against the wives of Nigerian politicians, criticizing their reluctance to seek divorce despite their husbands’ involvement in the continuous embezzlement of the country’s resources.
Expressing his dismay during a recent Instagram live session, Kuti condemned the pervasive culture of corruption among Nigerian politicians, attributing it to sheer greed. He questioned how these politicians’ spouses could continue to harbor affection for individuals who brazenly pillage public funds, causing untold hardship to millions of citizens.
“You cannot see any Nigerian woman divorce a Nigerian politician for stealing from the country. Can you love a thief? Somebody that is blatantly stealing, not because he lacks anything,” Kuti remarked passionately. He emphasized the inherent injustice in politicians enriching themselves at the expense of the nation’s welfare, particularly when they are already affluent.
Kuti’s criticism extends beyond mere condemnation of corruption; it delves into the ethical dimension of loyalty and moral responsibility. He argued that even in dire circumstances, resorting to theft to survive is unjustifiable, especially when it causes harm to others.
“Even if you are poor, regardless of how bad your situation is, to hurt somebody else just to eat is completely wrong,” Kuti asserted, underlining the principle of ethical conduct and social responsibility.
