SERAP Sues President Tinubu Over Petrol Price Hike, Demands Probe Into NNPC Corruption

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Bola Tinubu for allegedly failing to instruct the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to reverse the recent hike in petrol prices and investigate claims of corruption and mismanagement within the company.

The suit, which also names the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, and the NNPCL as respondents, was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja. SERAP is asking the court to compel President Tinubu to order the NNPCL to reduce the petrol price from N845 per liter to N600 per liter, citing the increase as “unjust, illegal, unconstitutional, and unreasonable.”

In addition to the price reduction, SERAP is calling for a probe into allegations of corruption in the NNPCL, particularly regarding the spending of $300 million in bailout funds from the government and a $6 billion debt owed to suppliers. SERAP demands that anti-corruption agencies prosecute those found culpable and recover any proceeds of corruption.

According to SERAP, the petrol price increase has worsened the economic situation for many Nigerians, pushing millions further into poverty. The organization argues that holding the NNPCL accountable for corruption would serve the public interest, as the increase violates both the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights obligations.

SERAP, represented by lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN, stressed that the petrol price hike has placed an undue burden on Nigeria’s most vulnerable citizens and is inconsistent with the government’s duty to ensure the basic living conditions needed for human dignity.
