Senior Lecturer Detained for Supporting #EndBadGovernance Protest, 10 Protesters Granted Bail

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to 10 #EndBadGovernance protesters, but concerns have been raised over the detention of Dr. Abubakar Alkali, a Senior Lecturer at Baze University. According to one of the protesters’ lawyers, Mr. Deji Adeyanju, Dr. Alkali has been held by the Department of State Security (DSS) for three weeks due to his support for the protests.

Adeyanju alleged that Dr. Alkali, from the Department of Petroleum & Gas Engineering, was taken by the DSS to Sokoto State, where he has remained in custody without charge. “Dr. Abubakar Alkali… was abducted by DSS three weeks ago and taken to Sokoto State for supporting the End Bad Governance protest. He has been in custody since then,” Adeyanju said.

While 10 protesters have been released on bail, Adeyanju highlighted that 115 others remain in detention at Kuje Correctional Centre, with over 1,000 protesters across the country still awaiting bail.

He emphasized that the arrest and arraignment of peaceful protesters is unconstitutional and called for their unconditional release.
