Senator Ndume Urges Federal Government’s Immediate Action on Maiduguri Flooding

ABUJA: Former Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume, has called on the Federal Government to urgently assist Borno State in responding to severe flooding that has submerged large parts of the state capital, Maiduguri. The flooding, caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam, has devastated homes, farms, and critical infrastructure in the area.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ndume expressed deep concern for the affected residents, noting that the gravity of the situation requires immediate intervention. “What has happened in my dear State capital, Maiduguri, is unfortunate. The level of damage is very bad,” he said, emphasizing the need for federal assistance alongside the efforts of the proactive state government.

The Alau Dam, which reached full capacity after weeks of heavy rainfall, has broken another channel, further threatening farmland and nearby communities. Authorities have urged residents near the riverbank to take precautions and protect their properties.

In response to the disaster, institutions such as the University of Maiduguri have been temporarily closed. The university’s management expressed sympathy for staff and students impacted by the floods in a statement released by its registrar, Ahmad A. Lawan.

Ndume, who recently returned from Borno after assisting families affected by insurgency in the region, warned that the damage caused by the flooding is beyond the capacity of the state government. He called for swift action from both the Federal Government and international development agencies to prevent the situation from worsening into a larger humanitarian crisis.

“I’m worried that the situation may get worse unless the federal government immediately steps in to assist the state government,” Ndume said. He urged international partners and aid agencies to provide relief and prevent what he described as a potentially “unimaginable human disaster.”
