The Nigerian Senate has issued a pressing directive to the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Benneth Igwe, and the police force to expedite efforts in rescuing 36 abducted children suspected to be trafficked out of the FCT.
Additionally, the Senate has called upon the social department of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to rigorously verify and monitor the registration of orphanage homes and shelters to prevent further incidents of child abduction and trafficking.
In a bid to combat the alarming trend of child trafficking across the nation, the Upper Chamber has tasked the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) with establishing robust systems to curb this menace.
These resolutions were reached following a motion brought forward by Senator Ireti Kingibe of the LP, FCT, during yesterday’s session. Kingibe revealed that out of the 40 abducted children, four were recovered from a woman identified as Success Nwako.
Detailing the disturbing timeline of events, Kingibe recounted, “On February 18, 2024, a complaint alleging illicit activities bordering on stealing, abduction, and trafficking of children perpetrated by one Madam Success Nwako… was addressed to me.” She further highlighted the extent of the syndicate’s operations, which spanned multiple area councils within the FCT.
The arrest of Madam Success, aided by the police and a vigilant community, sheds light on the coordinated efforts to combat child trafficking. Senator Oyewumi Olalere of the PDP, Osun West, commended this collaborative approach, emphasizing the vital role played by law enforcement and local communities in apprehending perpetrators.
