The Senate has mandated its Committee on Power to investigate and address the delay in the distribution of 100 megawatts of electricity to communities in Delta North Senatorial District. The resolution follows the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko, highlighting the need to resolve the unexplained delay in the electricity step-down from the Okpai Independent Power Plant.
The motion underscores the importance of addressing the issue, considering the significant contribution of the Okpai Independent Power Plant to Nigeria’s power supply grid. Despite upgrades and commitments to increase the power supply to host communities, there have been delays in executing projects aimed at enhancing electricity distribution.
Senators expressed their support for the motion, emphasizing the constitutional mandate to prioritize the welfare of the people. Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred the motion to the Committee on Power for further investigation and legislative action, with a directive to report back to plenary within one month.
