Segun Sowunmi Warns of Potential One-Party State Amid Wike-Fubara Feud

Segun Sowunmi, a prominent chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has cautioned that Nigeria could slip into a one-party state under the All Progressives Congress (APC) if tensions between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, are not swiftly resolved. Sowunmi raised this concern during an appearance on Politics Today, where he stressed the urgent need for mediation to preserve democratic principles and prevent political instability.

“With due respect, the APC needs to reflect on whether it is functioning as a genuine political party, even though it is in government,” Sowunmi said. He criticized the APC’s internal handling of political matters, contrasting it with the PDP’s recent congresses across the country.

Sowunmi called for quick intervention in the escalating feud between Wike and Fubara, warning that the dispute, if left unchecked, could undermine the country’s democracy. “There is a risk of this democracy morphing into a one-party state if the necessary mediation isn’t applied to the Wike-Fubara feud,” he warned.

He further criticized the APC’s internal processes, accusing the ruling party of being more of an election-focused vehicle than a functioning political organization.
